A marine fish belonging to the order Perciformes and family Tauegaginidae. It is found in the east coast of the Korean Peninsula, the Sea of Japan north of Toyama Prefecture, the Pacific coast north of Aomori Prefecture, the Sea of Okhotsk in various parts of Japan, Sakhalin, the Sea of Japan side of Russia, the Kuril Islands, Kamchatka, and other areas. Also known as Genna. Its body is laterally compressed and slender, with a slimy surface. Its dorsal fin is made up of only spines and is higher than its anal fin. It has no pelvic fins or lateral line. Its body is yellowish green and sometimes has net-like markings. It has five black spots on its dorsal fin. It is a small species that lives amongst seaweed along the coast, only reaching a total length of about 20 centimeters. It mainly feeds on amphipods and burrowing shrimps. Mature males have reddish bodies, and the net pattern on their body and the patterns on their dorsal and anal fins become more pronounced. The eggs are laid in clusters under stones or shells, and the female wraps her body around the egg mass to protect it. It is sometimes used as bait for fishing for rockfish and black rockfish. It is not eaten. It is easily confused with the closely related species O. tenuis , but O. tenuis has a white snout and six to seven black spots on its dorsal fin. Northern blenny fish such as the Taue blenny, the Striped blenny, the Nuime blenny, and the Nagazuka blenny are sometimes collectively called blenny fish.
