An aesthetic concept used mainly in 18th-century England. It is a derivative of the French pittoresque, borrowed from the Italian pittoresco (meaning "pertaining to a painter"). Today, it generally means picturesque or pretty. However, in the second half of the 18th century, there were repeated and complicated debates over the definition of the meaning of this word in relation to garden art, natural scenery, architecture, and landscape painting. First, William Gilpin (1724-1804) made people recognize the picturesque as an aesthetic category through his many books with aquatint illustrations and his practice of traveling in search of "picturesque things," which he called "picturesque tours."
