Parting gift - Senbetsu

Japanese:
Parting gift - Senbetsu

Money or goods given as a "farewell gift" to someone leaving on a journey, or the act of giving it. It is one of the customs of gift-giving. Long ago, people would see off a traveling person by pointing the horse's nose in the direction it was going, and so "uma no hanamuke" came to mean a farewell gift, which was then adapted to mean "gift." In many cases, cash is more appreciated than bulky items, but it is common for the recipient to give a souvenir when they return from their trip. In such cases, it is customary to give a gift that is at least half the amount of the gift. Money is the norm for farewell gifts for company transfers, etc. The envelope used is red and white mizuhiki with a bow. It is best to send the gift early to someone who is being transferred to a foreign country. In cases of retirement or changing jobs, it is a good idea to include a heart-warming letter.
