…The outline of this theory is first shown in the notes to the opera The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahogany (1929), which was composed by K. Weill and performed like The Threepenny Opera. On the eve of the rise of the Nazis, Brecht wrote new forms of politically themed works such as the educational play The Treatment, The Mother (around 1930), a dramatization of M. Gorky's novel of the same name, and St. Johanna in the Slaughterhouse (1929-31). The distinctive feature of all of these works is that they leave it up to the audience to consider the issues raised and reach a process of understanding. Brecht, who went into exile the day after the Reichstag arson attack on February 27, 1933, wrote the ballet The Seven Deadly Sins and the allegorical play The Round and the Pointed by the time he settled in Denmark at the end of the same year. …
