A female protagonist in Greek mythology. She was the daughter of Aeolus, the god of wind, and married Ceyx. However, when she and her husband were disrespectful and compared their intimacy to that of Zeus and Hera, Zeus became angry and transformed them into seabirds. Around the winter solstice, when this kingfisher-like bird, called Alcyon in Greek, lays its eggs in a floating nest in the sea, Aeolus calms the winds for two weeks and prevents storms on the sea.

It is a third magnitude star in the Pleiades star cluster. It is located almost in the center of the cluster and is the brightest star in the cluster, with an apparent magnitude of 2.86. It is a giant star of spectral type B7. It is a binary star.
