A planktonic protochordate belonging to the family Pycnonotidae of the class Uguisu. It is so named because when stimulated, the left and right peripharyngeal glands glow blue-green. It is distributed in all oceans, but is particularly common in the Pacific Ocean and is also commonly seen in the waters off Japan. The 3-8 mm reddish-orange individual zooids are regularly arranged and form hollow cylindrical colonies 10-20 cm long (occasionally 50 cm). The surface has many somewhat hard agar-like projections, with water inlet openings at their bases and water outlet openings into the common drainage cavity.
