The Guardian

A high-end British daily newspaper, on a par with The Times and The Daily Telegraph. In 1821, John Edward Taylor (1791-1844) was funded by 11 social reformers and launched a weekly paper called The Manchester Guardian. When the Stamp Duty Act, a tax on printed matter, was essentially abolished in 1855, it changed to a daily paper, lowering the price from 2 pence to 1 penny and increasing circulation. It then expanded to London in 1957, and in 1959 dropped Manchester from its name to become a national newspaper.

The Guardian owes much to its existence today to Charles Prestwich Scott (1846-1932). Since he became editor-in-chief at the young age of 25 in 1872, he has built up the reputation of the paper for 57 years by providing a liberal tone, coverage of literature and the arts, and extensive coverage by foreign correspondents. His idealistic reporting and commentary, which was not biased towards any one country or party, sometimes angered the public and caused a drop in circulation, but the paper did not change its reporting stance. The factors that made this possible from a management perspective include the fact that the Scott Trust, which was established in 1936, owned the paper and provided financial backing, and that it received funding from the Manchester Evening News, which it had acquired in 1924. The current ownership structure is unique in that the Scott Trust owns the media company Guardian Media Group (GMG), which in turn owns the Guardian News and Media Ltd, which directly publishes the newspaper. In 2008, Scott Trust was incorporated as a limited liability company called Scott Trust Limited, but the Trust's core objectives (such as defending the editorial independence of The Guardian) remain unchanged. GMG also owns The Observer, the oldest Sunday newspaper in the UK (acquired in 1993). The editorial policy continues the traditions of the paper's founding, such as protesting the Peterloo Massacre and opposing the Corn Laws, and is still based on centre-left liberalism. Circulation has fallen from 400,000 in 2000 to 280,000 in 2011. A web version was launched in 1999.

『タイムズ』『デーリー・テレグラフ』と並び称せられるイギリスの高級日刊紙。1821年、ジョン・エドワード・テーラーJohn Edward Taylor（1791―1844）が11人の社会改革論者から資金提供を受けて、『マンチェスター・ガーディアン』という名前の週刊紙として創刊した。1855年に印刷物への課税である印紙税法が実質廃止されると日刊紙に変わり、価格も2ペンスから1ペニーに引き下げて部数を伸ばした。その後1957年にはロンドンに進出し、1959年紙名からマンチェスターをはずして、全国紙となった。

　『ガーディアン』が今日あるのは、チャールズ・プレストウィッチ・スコットCharles Prestwich Scott（1846―1932）によるところが大きい。1872年に25歳の若さで編集長に就任してから57年間、自由主義的論調、文芸・芸術分野の報道、海外特派員報道の充実などによって同紙の声価を高めた。一国、一党派に偏らず、理想に拠(よ)って行う報道や論評は時に国民感情を刺激し、部数を落とすことがあったが、同紙は報道姿勢を変えなかった。それを経営面から可能にした要因としては、1936年設立のスコット・トラスト（信託組織）が同紙を所有し財政的な後ろ盾になっていたこと、1924年に買収した『マンチェスター・イブニング・ニューズ』からの資金を得ていたことなどがある。現在の所有関係は、スコット・トラストがメディア企業ガーディアン・メディア・グループ（GMG）を所有し、GMGが直接新聞を発行するガーディアン・ニュース・アンド・メディア社を所有するユニークな形になっている。スコット・トラストは2008年に株式会社に組織変更し、有限責任会社スコット・トラスト・リミテッドとなったが、トラストの核となる目的（『ガーディアン』編集の独立の擁護など）に変わりはないとしている。GMGはイギリスでもっとも古い日曜紙である『オブザーバー』の所有者でもある（1993年買収）。編集方針は、ピータールーの虐殺への抗議、穀物法への反対など創刊当初掲げていた伝統を受け継ぎ、現在も中道左派的な自由主義に拠っている。発行部数は2000年の40万部から28万部（2011）にまで減っている。ウェブ版は1999年からスタートした。
