Light [City] - Hikari

Japanese: 光[市] - ひかり

A city in the southeastern part of Yamaguchi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1943. It faces the Suo-Nada Sea and occupies the area around the mouth of the Shimada River. The Sanyo Main Line runs through it. It is located in the eastern part of the Shunan Industrial Zone, and metal and chemical industries are thriving. In recent years, the city has been attracting companies as it seeks to expand into the information industry. Its specialty products are dried shrimp and processed plum products. Murozumi in the east is an old port town that developed from a wind-waiting port during the days of sailing ships. The Murozumi Peninsula that embraces the port is home to the Gabiyama Forest (a natural monument), a tropical plant. Both Nijigahama and Murozumi beaches are some of the best swimming beaches in western Japan. In October 2004, Yamato Town, Kumage District, was incorporated into the city. 92.13 ^km2 . 山口県南東部の市。1943年市制。周防灘(すおうなだ)に臨み，島田川河口一帯を占める。山陽本線が通じる。周南工業地帯の東部に位置し，金属・化学工業が盛ん。近年は情報産業への進出が図られ，企業誘致が進む。干しエビ，梅加工品を特産。東部の室積(むろづみ)は古い港町で，帆船時代の風待港から発展。同港を抱く室積半島には暖地性植物の峨嵋(がび)山樹林（天然記念物）がある。虹ヶ浜・室積の両海岸は西日本屈指の海水浴場。2004年10月熊毛郡大和町を編入。92.13km²。５万3004人（2010）。
