UP is the abbreviation for United Press Association, and was founded in 1907 by Edward Wyllis Scripps (1854-1926) as a Scripps-Howard-affiliated news agency. Because it was outside the framework of the prewar world division (the Triple Pact) by Reuters, Habas, and Wolff, it lacked both the quantity and quality of news compared to AP, which was affiliated with them.
