…Before and after World War II, the three major news agencies, AP, UP, and INS, competed in the United States, but in 1958 UP and INS merged to form UPI. UP is the abbreviation for United Press Association, and was founded in 1907 by Edward Wyllis Scripps (1854-1926) as a Scripps-Howard-affiliated news agency. Because it was outside the framework of the prewar world division (the Triple Pact) by Reuters, Habas, and Wolff, it lacked both the quantity and quality of news compared to AP, which was affiliated with them. On the other hand, it expanded its sphere of activity with a freer stance, and even in the UK it organized BUP (British United Press) to challenge Reuters. …
