A full-length novel by Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy, published between 1875 and 1877. The female protagonist, Anna, is the wife of Karenin, a government official in St. Petersburg. However, dissatisfied with her cold, distant husband, she falls in love with Vronsky, a handsome young officer. Anna, who tried to stick to her own feelings rather than to be considered socially acceptable, finds herself shut out by aristocratic society, and begins to doubt the love of her lover, which leads her to commit suicide by train. In contrast to this, the story depicts the blessed, idyllic love between Levin, who could be considered Tolstoy's alter ego, and Kitty. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
