Yanai [city] - Yanai

Japanese: 柳井[市] - やない
Yanai [city] - Yanai
A city in the southeastern part of Yamaguchi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It faces the Suo-Nada Sea and includes Heigun Island off the Murozu Peninsula. The city center is at the foot of Mt. Kotoishi, and was known as the storehouse of the Iwakuni Domain. It developed as a commercial town with many wealthy merchants. The Furuichi Kanaya district, which still retains the white-walled streetscape of the time, is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the national government. Although it declined somewhat after the opening of the Sanyo Main Line, it is part of the Shunan Industrial Zone, and in addition to traditional industries such as textiles, such as Yanai stripes, and brewing, large machinery and chemical factories have also moved in. In recent years, cutting-edge technology companies have been established on the reclaimed land in Yanai Bay, and the electronics industry accounts for a large proportion of the area. Yanai Port is a long-standing commercial and fishing port, and there is a regular shipping route between it and Matsuyama City's Mitsuhama Port. There is the Chausuyama Tomb (historic site) and the Yoda Garyu Plum (natural monument). In February 2005, Ohata Town, Kuda County, was incorporated. Area: 140.05 km2 . Population: 34,730 (2010).
