In Greek mythology, the water nymphs were the daughters of the Titan Oceanus, the patriarch of the Titans, and his sister Tethys. According to Hesiod, there were 3,000 of them in all. The eldest sister was the river Styx, the river of the underworld. The other sisters included Metis, the goddess of wisdom who became Zeus' first wife, and Dione, the mother of Aphrodite.
