Cayor Kingdom - Cayor Kingdom (English spelling)

Cayor Kingdom - Cayor Kingdom (English spelling)
A small kingdom that existed in Senegal, the westernmost part of West Africa, from the mid-16th century onwards. The Wolof people, who lived in large numbers in the former Kingdom of Ghana, rebelled against Islam when it was introduced by the Berber Almoravid dynasty, and moved south to the area of present-day Senegal. According to legend, the Wolof kingdom (Jolof Kingdom), which had existed since the 14th century, split in the mid-16th century to form the Kayole Kingdom, one of the small kingdoms. Since then, there have been repeated struggles for supremacy between the kingdoms, but even after French settlers came to Senegal, it continued to function as a kingdom until the 18th and 19th centuries. The last king, Rat-Dior, who took the throne in the mid-19th century, was expelled by France in 1864, and then repeatedly resisted and compromised for more than 20 years. In particular, he was fiercely opposed to the construction of a railway between Dakar and Saint-Louis in 1881 for the export of peanuts by France. After his title of king was abolished in 1885, he fought a final battle, was killed in a surprise attack in 1886, and the kingdom was colonized by France.
