Mauretania (English spelling)

The ancient Roman name for the region from Ampsaga to the Atlantic Ocean, including the western half of the Atlas Mountains in Africa. It is now Morocco and Algeria. The indigenous people were semi-nomadic people of Berber descent, divided into the Mauri and the Masaeshri. They became subjects of Rome in the second half of the 2nd century BC. In the mid-1st century, they were annexed by Rome and divided into a western region, with its capital at Chinggi (Tangier), and an eastern region, with its capital at Caesarea. Roman influence remained on the coast, and the region gained independence in the 5th century, but was conquered by the Arabs in the 7th century.
