Jack and the Beanstalk

A representative folktale from England, the UK. Lazy Jack trades his cow for some beans. He climbs the beanstalk that reaches the sky overnight, reaches the land above, and defeats the giant by taking back the harp, the chicken that lays golden eggs, and the bag of gold that the giant had stolen from Jack's father. Some interpretations say that the harp symbolizes the wind, the bag of gold the rain, and the chicken the sun, and that Jack's adventure represents bringing back to earth the things necessary for human life. It is said that the origin of this tale dates back as far as Yggdrasil (the great ash tree that connects the heavens, earth, and the underworld) in Norse mythology, and there are similar folktales in various regions.

イギリス、イングランド地方の代表的民話。怠け者のジャックが、牛と交換に豆を手に入れる。一晩のうちに天まで伸びた豆の木を登って、空の上の国にたどり着き、巨人がジャックの父から奪った竪琴(たてごと)と金の卵を産むニワトリと金の袋を奪い返し、巨人を退治する話。竪琴は風を、金の袋は雨を、ニワトリは太陽を象徴し、ジャックの冒険は、人間生活に必要なものを地上に取り戻すことを意味するという解釈もある。起源は遠く北欧神話のイグドラシル（天と地と下界を結ぶトネリコの大樹）にさかのぼるといわれ、各地に類似した民話がある。
