Antimony pentoxide is the name of the hydrate of Sb ₂ O _5. It is produced by hydrolysis of hexachloroantimonic acid.

2HSbCl ₆ +5H ₂ O→Sb ₂ O ₅ +12HCl

It is a colorless powder that is slightly soluble in water. When heated above 300°C, it loses oxygen and gradually changes to Sb ₂ O _4. It is an amphoteric compound that reacts with both acids and alkalis. In aqueous solution, it is thought to take the form H ⁺ [Sb(OH) ₆ ] ^- , but this is not certain.
