Higashiichiki [town] - Higashiichiki
An old town in the northwest of the Satsuma Peninsula, Hioki District, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is home to Yunomoto Hot Springs and is served by the Kagoshima Main Line. Rice is grown in the lowlands, and vegetables, tea, tobacco, and fruit are grown on the plateau, and livestock is also raised. Coastal fishing is carried out mainly at Eguchi Fishing Port, and the town produces dried sardines. Satsuma ware is a local specialty. There is a habitat for the myrtle (a natural monument). In May 2005, it merged with Ijuin Town, Hiyoshi Town, and Fukiage Town in Hioki District to become a city, Hioki City. 70.90 km2 . Population: 13,519 (2003).
