…His collection of poems, “Olives” (1549), is composed of 50 sonnets (fourteen-line poems) that imitate Petrarch and others, and put his own ideas into practice. In 1553, he accompanied his family official Jean du Bellay to Rome, and during his four-year stay there he composed the poems that make up “Ancient Roman Sites”, “Elegy”, and “Pastoral Amusements” (all 1558). The first is a collection of sonnets that praises ancient Roman culture while being conscious of his own perspective, and the second is a collection of 191 sonnets that is considered his masterpiece, satirizing the hypocrisy and vices experienced in real Roman life and expressing his painful feelings of longing for home. …
