Japanese: ネジバナ - ねじばな

A perennial plant of the orchid family (APG classification: Orchidaceae). It has a short rhizome with several thickened roots growing in bundles. Most of the leaves are basal. From April to August, it produces hairy inflorescences at the end of flower stalks 10 to 40 cm tall, with small flowers densely arranged in a spiral. The flowers are reddish purple with a white lip. It has no spur. It grows in grasslands and cliffs throughout Japan, and is often found on city lawns. The basic species, Nangokunejibana, has no hairs on the inflorescence and is widely distributed in Okinawa, Southeast Asia, and Australia. The name comes from the twisted inflorescence.

The genus Spiranthes is characterized by fascicular succulent roots, twisted inflorescences, and powdery pollen masses, and there are about 100 species distributed from the tropics to temperate zones.

Cultural history

In the Edo period, it was called Mojizuri, and its cultivation can be found in the Kadan Komoku (1681) and Kadan Chikinsho (1695). The name Mojizuri comes from Shinobu Mojizuri (Shinobizuri), which appears in the Tales of Ise, in passages such as "Michinoku no Shinobu Mojizuritareyu ni Ranresomeni Shiwarenarakuni," and is named after the faint, finely twisted pattern of Shinobu Mojizuri, which resembles the twisted, connected flowers of the Nejibana. Nejibana are twisted because the buds turn backwards, and there are left-handed and right-handed varieties. The ratio varies by region.

ラン科（APG分類：ラン科）の多年草。根茎は短く、肥厚した根が数本束生する。葉は大部分が根生する。4～8月、高さ10～40センチメートルの花茎の先に毛のある花序をつくり、小花を螺旋(らせん)状に密に並べる。花は紅紫色で唇弁は白色。距(きょ)はない。日本全土の草地や崖(がけ)などに生え、都市の芝生にも多い。基本種ナンゴクネジバナは花序に毛がなく、沖縄、および東南アジア、オーストラリアに広く分布する。名は、花序がねじれることに由来する。

　ネジバナ属は束生する多肉根、ねじれた花序、粉質の花粉塊などで特徴づけられ、熱帯から温帯に約100種分布する。

文化史

江戸時代はモジズリの名でよばれ、『花壇綱目(かだんこうもく)』（1681）や『花壇地錦抄(かだんちきんしょう)』（1695）に栽培の記録がある。モジズリの名は、『伊勢(いせ)物語』の「みちのくのしのぶもぢずりたれゆゑに乱れそめにしわれならなくに」などに名のみえる忍捩摺(しのぶもじず)り（忍摺り）にちなみ、忍捩摺りのかすれた細かいもじり模様が、ネジバナの花のねじれて連なる状態に似ていることからつけられた。ネジバナがねじれるのは、つぼみが後ろ側に反転するからで、左巻きと右巻きがある。その比率は地域によって異なる。
