This theater is located in Sakae, Naka Ward, Nagoya. It was built in 1897 (Meiji 30) by Nagoya Theater Co., Ltd., whose president was Hasegawa Tahyoe (1846-1906), modeled after the Meijiza Theater in Tokyo. It is a Renaissance-style Western-style theater with a capacity of about 1,200 people, and opened in May of the same year with the first Ichikawa Sadanji troupe. It was renovated in 1935 (Showa 10), burned down during the war in 1945 (Showa 20), and rebuilt in 1947. It burned down again in 1961, but was newly reopened in 1963 as the Misonoza Kaikan, with two basement floors and eight aboveground floors. The theater section occupies the first to fifth floors, and the Misonoza Drama Library is located on the second basement floor. It has an audience capacity of 1,659 people. It was closed in March 2013 (Heisei 25) for reconstruction, and is scheduled to reopen in 2018. As the only Kabuki theater in Nagoya, it stages a variety of plays and contributes to the theatrical culture of the Chukyo region.
