Hierakonpolis (English spelling)
An ancient city on the west bank of the Nile, 80 km south of Luxor, Egypt. Today it is Kom el-Ahmar. Hierakonpolis is the Greek name, and in ancient Egypt it was called Nekehen. It was an important city from the prehistoric to the Predynastic period, and its ruins are important for understanding the early historical period of Egypt. It was the capital of the third nome of Upper Egypt, and at the end of the Predynastic period it was the capital of the Upper Egyptian Kingdom. The remains of a temple dedicated to the god Horus from the Archaic period (c. 3100-c. 2686 BC) and the remains of a citadel from that time have been discovered, and it is particularly famous for the discovery of the Predynastic period's King Narmer's palette, a golden hawk's head, and bronze statues of Pepi I and Prince Merenra, all of which are in the collection of the Egyptian National Museum.
