Ham (English spelling)

Japanese: ハム(英語表記)ham
Ham (English spelling)
A common name for amateur radio operators. Qualified individuals who can set up private shortwave radio stations using voice or Morse code. The word may have originated from ham, meaning a good actor, or it may be a corrupted version of the word "am" from amateur. Amateur radio was first attempted in the United States in the early 20th century, and quickly spread to other countries around the world. In Japan, experiments began around 1925, and the Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL) was formed, with stations officially permitted in 1927. Amateur radio was temporarily banned during World War II, but the number of amateur radio operators increased rapidly after the war. Amateur radio operators also contribute to communication with hams in the International Amateur Radio League (JARU) and in emergency communications. Amateur radio is regulated by the Radio Law and related laws, and communication related to financial gain is prohibited. To set up a radio station, a license is issued by the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications to anyone who has obtained the qualifications of an amateur radio operator through a national examination or training course, regardless of age, sex, or occupation. There are four types of amateur radio operator qualifications, from Class 1 to Class 4, and each level specifies the scope of radio equipment operation that can be performed.
