Uganda Railways

...In 1920, the coastal areas where the Zanzibar chief's interests remained were also included, and the colony and protectorate of Kenya was formed. During this time, the Uganda Railway (from Mombasa on the Indian Ocean coast to Kisumu on the shores of Lake Victoria) was completed in 1901, the Eastern Highlands of the Uganda Protectorate was incorporated into the East African Protectorate in 1902, and a law was issued regarding the transfer of land other than that occupied by the natives, leading to a gradual increase in the number of white settlers. In 1906, it was decided that the Central Highlands would be transferred only to whites, and with this legal recognition (1915), the White Highlands were formed, consisting of mixed farms of white settlers cultivating coffee, corn, wheat, and dairy farming, and large-scale sisal and tea plantations organized as companies.
