A comet discovered by Austrian W. Biela in 1772. It appeared several times afterwards as a Jupiter family comet with a period of 6.70 years, but when it appeared in 1846, it split into two, and two comets were born. At the time of its next perihelion in 1852, the two comets were observed moving on slightly different orbits, but they have not been seen since. However, when the Earth passed through the orbit of Comet Biela during its scheduled appearances in 1872 and 1885, a large meteor shower was seen. It is thought that these were caused by fragments of the comet moving on the orbit of the comet, and they are now called the Andromedid meteor shower.

1772年オーストリアの W.ビエラにより発見された彗星。周期 6.70年の木星族彗星としてその後数回出現したが，1846年の出現時に2つに分裂し，2個の彗星が生れ，次の近日点通過時の 52年には2つの彗星が少し異なる軌道上を動いているのが観測されたが以後見つかっていない。しかし 72年や 85年の予定された出現時に地球がビエラ彗星の軌道を通過したとき，大流星雨が見られた。それらは彗星の軌道上を動いている彗星の断片によるものと考えられ，現在アンドロメダ座流星群と呼ばれている。
