Jung, Carl Gustav
Born: July 26, 1875, Keswill
Died: June 6, 1961, Zurich Swiss psychologist and psychoanalyst. After completing his medical studies at the University of Basel, he studied under Pierre MF Janet in Paris. After graduating from the University of Zurich, he became a professor at the University of Basel in 1943. In 1948, he established the Jung Institute in Zurich. He was initially interested in occult research such as psychic phenomena, and was an enthusiastic supporter of Sigmund Freud's theories. Later, in collaboration with A. Mader, he attempted new developments in the concepts of libido and the unconscious, and founded analytical psychology. He also created a word association test to discover the unconscious of mentally ill people, and invented the concept of complexes. His major works include Symbols of Transformation (1912, revised edition Symbole der Wandlung 1952), The Theory of Types (1921), Contributions to Analytical Psychology (1928), The Integration of the Personality (1940), Psychology and Alchemy (1944), A Modern Mythus (1958), and Über die Psychologie des Unbewussten (1960).
