X-ray scattering

...When an X-ray hits a free electron and is deflected (scattered, called X-ray scattering), its wavelength is extended by a small amount determined by the angle of deflection (scattering angle). This effect is also observed for electrons bound to atoms, because the effect of the electrons bound to the atom is almost not noticeable outside the atom.
