A river in the Veneto region of northern Italy. It is 220 km long. It is known for the Battle of Piave, where the Italian army stopped the Austrian army from advancing south on this bank during World War I. It originates from Mount Peralba in the Carnia Alps, passes through the broad basins of the Cadore and Berno, and empties into the Adriatic Sea at the town of Corterazzo, east of Venice. It is used for hydroelectric power in the upper reaches and for irrigation downstream. [Mochizuki Kazushi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
