A white police officer indiscriminately shot Africans protesting against the pass laws in Sharpeville, a black residential area on the outskirts of Johannesburg in the Union of South Africa. This incident on March 21, 1960 left nine people dead and 186 injured, and developed into a nationwide uproar. The government declared a state of emergency to calm the situation, and outlawed organizations such as the African National Congress, the central organization in the anti-apartheid movement. This led to a major decline in the vitality of the anti-apartheid movement. →Apartheid Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
