Japanese: 本庄[市] - ほんじょう

A city in northwest Saitama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The northern part occupies the alluvial lowland on the south bank of the Tone River, the central part is a plateau of alluvial fan deposited by the Kanna River, and the southern part is hilly land at the northern foot of the Chichibu Mountains. The city center was a castle town in the late Middle Ages, and in the early modern period it flourished as a post town and market town on the Nakasendo road, and after the Meiji period it flourished as a distribution center for cocoons. The city is served by the Joetsu Shinkansen, Takasaki Line, Hachiko Line, and Kan'etsu Expressway, and an industrial park has been developed in the south, with industries such as electrical equipment, lumber, woodworking, food, and chemicals. It is being developed into a residential area. In January 2006, Kodama Town, Kodama District, was incorporated. 89.69 ^km2 . Population: 81,889 (2010).

埼玉県北西部の市。1954年市制。北部は利根川南岸の沖積低地，中部は神流(かんな)川により堆積した扇状地の台地，南部は秩父山地北麓の丘陵地を占める。中心市街は中世末期の城下町で，近世には中山道の宿場町，市場町，明治以後は繭の集散地として栄えた。上越新幹線，高崎線，八高線，関越自動車道が通じ，南部には工業団地が造成され，電気機器，製材，木工，食品，化学などの工業が行われる。住宅地化が進んでいる。2006年１月児玉郡児玉町を編入。89.69km²。８万1889人（2010）。
