...Due to the arm movement when hitting the ball, the positioning of the players on the court, and hitting the ball from one's own court to the opponent's court, it was once called "volleyball," using the character "pai," which means "to push open with the hand," "to line up," or "to remove."

It was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan (1870-1942), a physical education director at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. He was in charge of physical education classes for middle-aged and elderly people, but at the time the only notable indoor sport was basketball, which was too strenuous for them.
