This ranch is located in Shizunai Town, Hidaka Subprefecture, Hokkaido. It is currently called the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Niikappu Breeding Ranch. It began in 1872 (Meiji 5) when the Hokkaido Development Commission gathered nearly 2,000 wild horses on about 70,000 hectares of land across the three counties of Shizunai, Niikappu and Saru. In 1877, Edwin Dun, a foreign official, carried out full-scale development and became the Hidaka Horse Ranch. In 1884, it became the Niikappu Horse Ranch under the jurisdiction of the Imperial Household Ministry, and in 1888, it became the Niikappu Imperial Ranch, and contributed to the breeding and development of draft horses and military horses, as well as the improvement of their breeds.
