Papini - Papini (English spelling) Giovanni Papini

Italian writer, critic, poet, and editor. Founder of Leonardo magazine (1903). Editor-in-chief of the nationalist publication The Kingdom. Contributor to the Voice magazine. Founder of the avant-garde magazine La Cerva (1913) and champion of Futurism, but later left the movement. A militant atheist in his youth, he declared his conversion to Catholicism after the First World War (Life of Christ, 1921). He was an extremely ambitious writer, with stories, poetry, philosophy, history, and religion. He was also a polemicist, full of paradoxes, satire, and passion. In The Twilight of the Philosophers (1906), he criticized the major thinkers of the 19th century for their uncertainty, and in The Failure (1912), he recounted his own history of trying too much and failing, and in The Living Dante (1933), he portrayed a very human Dante. During the fascist period, he supported its policies.

イタリアの作家、評論家、詩人、編集者。『レオナルド』誌を創刊（1903）。国家主義的刊行物『王国』の編集長。『声』誌の寄稿者。前衛誌『ラチェルバ』を創刊（1913）し、未来派を擁護したが、のちこの運動から脱退する。若いころは戦闘的無神論者で、第一次世界大戦後、カトリック教への回心を表明する（『キリストの生涯』1921）。物語、詩のほか、哲学、歴史、宗教など広い分野にわたる著作活動をきわめて野心的に行った。また逆説と風刺と情熱に満ちた論争家の一面もある。『哲学者たちのたそがれ』（1906）では19世紀の主要思想家を不確実性のゆえに批判し、『失敗者』（1912）ではあまりに多くの事を企てて失敗した自己の経歴を語り、『生けるダンテ』（1933）ではきわめて人間的なダンテ像を描く。ファシズム時代にはその政策にくみした。
