Sadamoto Fujii

Sadamoto Fujii
1732-97 (Kyoho 17 - Kansei 9)
A scholar of historical research in the mid-Edo period. Born in Kyoto. Also known as Touteikan. Born into a family of monks, he entered the priesthood but later returned to secular life. His pen name was Shifuyu and he was commonly known as Shuzo. His pen names included Mubutsai, Mosai, and Koko. His surname is also said to be Fujiwara. He studied Confucianism, Japanese classical studies, waka poetry, gagaku, calligraphy, seal carving, and epigraphy. He excelled at historical research and was most familiar with the study of court etiquette and customs. He served at the Imperial Court from his prime, and assisted the work of court etiquette and customs scholars Takahashi Muneta and Uramatsu Kozen. He wrote many books, including Annotated Commentary on the Ritual Book of the Grand Shrines of Ise, Koko Sajōki, and Kogawa Fu. It is well known that his work Shokōhatsu, which examined ancient cultures using archaeological methods, inspired scholars of Japanese classical studies, and Motoori Norinaga wrote Kenkyōjin to refute it.

江戸中期の考証学者。京都の人。藤貞幹(とうていかん)とも。僧家に生まれ僧籍に入ったが,のち還俗。字は子冬,通称叔蔵。号は無仏斎,蒙斎,好古など。姓は藤原ともいわれる。儒学,国学,和歌,雅楽,書道,篆刻,金石文などを学ぶ。考証を得意とし,最も有職故実学に精通する。壮年より宮中に奉仕し,有職故実家高橋宗直,裏松固禅らの業を助ける。《伊勢両大神宮儀式帳考註》《好古襍記》《古瓦譜》など著書多数にのぼる。また考古学的方法によって古代の文化を考察した著作《衝口発(しようこうはつ)》が国学者を刺激し,本居宣長が《鉗狂人(けんきようじん)》を著してこれに反駁したことは有名。
