The Banmana are an ethnic group of the Mande people who live in the upper Niger basin of Mali. They have an estimated population of about 2.7 million. They are settled farmers who raise livestock, but there are also various classes of skilled workers. They inherit the family line patrilineally, and the head of each group is called Fama, who is in charge of agricultural ceremonies. They have unique abstract concepts and cosmology, and have developed religious sculptures made of wood and metal. They have lived in the upper Niger basin of the Mali Empire since about the 12th century, and in the 17th century they established the kingdoms of Segou and Berdougu, but in 1861 the kingdoms were overthrown by the Islamic imam El Hadji Omar, and became a French colony in 1876, and in 1960 became part of the Republic of Mali.
