A city in western India, close to the Gulf of Cambay in the southern corner of Gujarat state. English name: Baroda. Capital of the former princely state of Baroda. An important railway location. Cotton weaving, chemical fertilizer, machinery, and metal industries are carried out, and there is an industrial park. Oil and natural gas development is also carried out. Famous for its specialties of gemstones and silver thread weaving. Has a university (established in 1949) and a museum. Population: 1,822,000 (2011).
