Myojoji Temple

Myojoji Temple

Located in Takiya-cho, Hakui-shi, Ishikawa Prefecture, this is the head temple of the Nichiren sect in the Hokuriku region. It is called Kin'ei-zan. The principal image is the Great Mandala of the sect's founder, Tenjo. There is also a shakubuku statue made during the Edo period. It was founded in 1294 (Einin 2). Nichizo, on his way from Sado to Kyoto, persuaded Manzo, the head priest of Tenpyoji Temple on Mount Isurugi. Manzo changed his name to Nichijo and, with the help of Shibahara, founded the oldest Nichiren sect temple in Noto. Afterwards, it was protected by the Maeda clan, the feudal lords of Kaga, and especially by Jufukuin, the mother of the third feudal lord, Maeda Toshitsune, who was a devoted follower of the temple, and it was developed as his family temple. Since its founding, it has never suffered a major disaster, and the main hall (built in irimoya-zukuri style), Niomon gate, bell tower, shoin, Sanjubanshindo hall, sutra hall, five-story pagoda, Soshido hall, Sankodo hall, kuri (kitchen ward), and other buildings have been designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, along with the landscape maki-e desk and landscape maki-e paper box. A memorial service will be held on July 26th and 27th to honor the achievements of Nichijo.
