Cirebon (English spelling)
A port city on the Java Sea in West Java, Indonesia. It belongs to Java Barat Province. In the 16th century, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Cirebon and became a central part of West Java. In the early 18th century, it was a Dutch protectorate, and frequent rebellions were suppressed. There are ruins and tombs of the Cirebon dynasty nearby, and it is a Muslim pilgrimage site. The city exports sugar, copra, rice, coffee, etc. There are industries such as chemicals, spinning, machinery, and tobacco. Fishing is also thriving, and shrimp is particularly famous. The city is connected by a railway along the north coast and roads from Bandung and Tasikmalaya inland. Although it is far from the center of Javanese culture, a unique culture such as masked dance has been nurtured. Population: 223,776 (1980).
