According to actual measurements, the specific heat of a metal at extremely low temperatures is the sum of a part proportional ^to T3 and a part proportional to T ( T is the absolute temperature). The former is the specific heat due to lattice vibration, and the latter is due to the conduction electrons unique to metals, and is called the electronic specific heat. Of the Fermi-degenerate conduction electrons, only those within an energy range of about k _B T around the Fermi level are thermally excited, so the entropy is proportional to T , and as a result, the specific heat is also proportional to T ( k _B is the Boltzmann constant).

金属の極低温における比熱は実測によればT³に比例する部分とTに比例する部分の和になる(Tは絶対温度)。前者は格子振動による比熱であり，後者は金属に特有な伝導電子に由来するもので，これを電子比熱と呼ぶ。フェルミ縮退した伝導電子のうち，熱的に励起されるのはフェルミ準位をはさんでk_BT程度のエネルギー幅の中にあるものだけであるので，エントロピーはTに比例し，その結果比熱もTに比例する(k_Bはボルツマン定数)。
