Lu Zhishen (English spelling) Lǔ Zhì shen

Japanese: 魯智深 - ろちしん（英語表記）Lǔ Zhì shēn

One of the 108 leaders in the Chinese novel "Water Margin." His real name was Lu Da, and Zhishen was his Buddhist name. His nickname was Flower Priest. He was originally a soldier in Yan'an (Shaanxi Province), but after accidentally killing someone, he became a monk at Mount Wutai to avoid punishment, and later joined Liangshan Marsh. During the campaign against Fang La, he captured him alive, but on the way back, he realized his fate and entered nirvana in meditation at the Liuhe Pagoda in Hangzhou. He was a violent man on par with Li Kui and Wu Song, and his stubborn personality was typical of low-ranking soldiers of the time. The Peking opera "Wild Pig Forest," in which he appears, is still often performed today.

中国の小説《水滸伝》の108人の頭目の一人。本名は魯達，智深は法名。綽号（あだな）は花和尚。もと延安(陝西省)の軍人であったが，誤って人を殺し，罪を逃れるため五台山で出家し，のち梁山泊に加わる。方臘（ほうろう）征伐の際，方臘を生捕りにするが，帰途，杭州の六和塔で運命を悟り座禅のまま入寂した。李逵（りき），武松とならぶ暴れ者で，その剛直な性格は，当時の下級軍人の一典型を示す。彼が登場する京劇の《野猪林》は今でもよく上演されている。
