It is located in the southeast of Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture, on the left bank of the Karasu River, a tributary of the Tone River, and was once part of Gunma County in Kozuke Province. During the Edo period, it was an important location for land and water transportation, with the Nakasendo road passing through it, and in 1793, the shogunate's magistrate's office was established here. The Iwanami magistrate's office had a jurisdiction of over 58,700 koku, covering eight counties in Kozuke Province, including Gunma, Kanra, and Midorino. The Kanto Torishitsuyaku, established in 1805, used the magistrate's office as a base to police Joshu. When Kimura Kai-no-kami was appointed as the new Kanto Gundai in 1865, the jurisdiction was expanded to include the whole of Kozuke Province and five counties in Musashi Province. During the Tenguto Rebellion in 1864, the magistrate's hunter rifle squad became the center of the pursuit and suppression efforts. When the Imperial Army descended in 1868, the plan to set up a peasant rifle corps for the Daikansho failed, and the main officials fled to Edo, causing the Daikansho to collapse. In the same year, Iwanami Prefecture was established, taking over most of the territory controlled by the old Daikansho, and in 1869, the Yoshii Domain was annexed, but Iwanami Prefecture was abolished in the same year, and the first Gunma Prefecture was established.

群馬県高崎市の南東部，利根川支流烏(からす)川の左岸にあり，かつては上野国群馬郡のうち。江戸時代には中山道が通る水陸交通の要地で，1793年幕府代官所が設置される。岩鼻代官所の管轄領域は群馬郡・甘楽(かんら)郡・緑野(みどの)郡など上野国８郡にわたる５万8700石余に及んだ。1805年創設の関東取締出役は同代官所を拠点に上州を取締った。1865年木村甲斐守が新規関東郡代として着任すると管轄領域は上野一国と武蔵国５郡にまで拡大。1864年の天狗党の乱では代官所付猟師鉄砲隊が追討の中枢となった。1868年の官軍下向に際し，代官所詰農兵銃隊取立計画が挫折，主だった役人は江戸に逃走して代官所は崩壊。同年旧代官所の支配地域をほぼ引き継いで岩鼻県を置き，1869年には吉井藩を併合するが，岩鼻県は同年廃止されて第１次群馬県が成立。
