Sea cave - kaishokudo

Japanese: 海食洞 - かいしょくどう

A cave carved into a sea cliff by the erosive action of waves. It often forms along faults, joints, or bedding. Sea caves are well developed almost at sea level and can be several tens of meters long. When a sea cave connects with a vertical hole, a "blowhole" is formed, from which seawater erupts like a geyser or fountain. When a sea cave rises or sinks, uplifted sea caves and submerged sea caves are formed.

波の侵食作用によって海食崖(がい)にうがたれた洞穴。断層、節理、層理などに沿って形成されることが多い。海食洞はほぼ海面付近の水準に良好に発達し、長さは数十メートルに及ぶことがある。海食洞と垂直方向の穴とが連結すると、「潮吹き穴」が形成され、海水が間欠泉あるいは噴水のように噴き上がる。海食洞が隆起または沈降すると、隆起海食洞や沈水海食洞などが形成される。
