Uhle, Friedrich Max

Born: March 25, 1856 in Dresden
[Died] 1942. Berkeley A German pioneer in Peruvian archaeology. He studied under Andean archaeologist A. Steubel at the Dresden Museum, and after investigating the ruins of Tiahuanaco in Bolivia, he devoted himself to archaeological research in Peru, Chile, and Ecuador. He was particularly involved in the excavation of major ruins such as Pachacama and Chan Chan on the coast of Peru, and made a great achievement. He also built museums in Lima and Santiago, and systematically classified the vast amount of material, creating a chronological framework for Andean archaeology. His main work is Pachacama (1903).

ドイツ人でペルー考古学の先駆者。ドレスデン博物館でアンデス考古学者の A.スチューベルに師事し，ボリビアのティアワナコ遺跡の調査後は，ペルー，チリ，エクアドルの考古学研究に専念。特にペルー海岸地帯のパチャカマ，チャンチャンなどの大遺跡の発掘を手がけ，多大な業績を収めた。またリマ市やサンチアゴ市に博物館を建設し，膨大な資料を系統的に分類して，アンデス考古学の編年的枠組みをつくり上げた。主著に『パチャカマ』 (1903) がある。
