Transportation system under the Ritsuryo system: Post houses were set up every 30 ri (about 16 km) on various roads, and post horses were provided for official use by government officials. Station officials were assigned to the stations, and station workers were requisitioned from the stations to raise the post horses and cultivate the station fields. This system declined with the decline of the Ritsuryo system. After the Kamakura period, inns were established, and in the Edo period, post towns developed around the highways.
