Flowing Buddha

Japanese:
Flowing Buddha

A drowned body floating in the sea. It is also called a sea Buddha or a Dozaemon. People who work at sea have a custom of picking up a floating Buddha and worshiping it. Fishermen in particular believe that meeting a floating Buddha will grant them fishing success, and there is a custom of celebrating it, calling it Urahanjo. When one is found at the beginning of a fishing trip, if you tell the person to wait there until you return, it will strangely not move from its original position. When picking it up, it is said that the person should ask the drowned body, "Will you let me fish?" and wait until the other person answers, "Yes, yes, let me," before pulling it up. It is pulled up from the starboard rudder and lowered onto land from the port rudder. In some places, straw or white cotton is wrapped around the bow of the boat carrying the body.
