A city in southern Miyagi Prefecture, north of the downstream of the Abukuma River. It was incorporated as a city in 1971. The provincial capital was located in the city center long ago, and it later developed as a post town on the Oshu Kaido road. It is a junction of the Tohoku Main Line and the Joban Line, and many people commute to Sendai City. It produces Chinese cabbage and also engages in fishing. In 1964, the Sendai Bay area was designated a new industrial city, and factories for pulp, rubber products, etc. were established there. The Hatsuuma Festival at Takekoma Shrine is famous. Sendai Airport, an international airport, is located across from Natori City to the northeast. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 60.45 km2 . Population 44,187 (2010). 宮城県南部,阿武隈川下流北部の市。1971年市制。中心市街は古く国府が置かれ,のち奥州街道の宿場町として発達。東北本線と常磐線の分岐点で,仙台市への通勤者が多い。ハクサイを産し,漁業も行う。1964年仙台湾地区が新産都市に指定されたのを機に,パルプ,ゴム製品などの工場が進出した。竹駒神社の初午祭は有名。北東部の名取市にかけて国際空港の仙台空港がある。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。60.45km2。4万4187人(2010)。
