African rock rat

Japanese: イワネズミ(岩鼠) - イワネズミ（英語表記）African rock rat

A rodent mammal of the family Muscidae that resembles a ground squirrel. It is also called the African rock rat. It is found in Namibia and southern Angola in southwestern Africa. Its body length is 14-20 cm, its tail length 13-18 cm, and its body is adapted to crawl into narrow cracks in rocks, and it can move its ribs to flatten them. Its head is also flat and its ears are short, with four toes on its front feet and five on its hind feet. Its fur is soft and silky, dark brown over most of its body with an orange tinge on the hindquarters, and short, black-brown hair on its tail. Its snout and the area around its eyes are yellowish-white.

ジリスに似た齧歯（げつし）目イワネズミ科の哺乳類。アフリカイワネズミともいう。アフリカ南西部のナミビアとアンゴラ南部に分布。体長14～20cm，尾長13～18cm，体は岩の狭い割れ目に潜り込むのに適し，肋骨を動かして平たくすることができる。頭も扁平で耳介が短く，前足に4指，後足に5指がある。体毛は軟らかく絹状，体の大部分は暗褐色で後半身は橙色を帯び，尾には黒褐色のあまり長くない毛を生ずる。吻（ふん）と眼のまわりは黄白色。
