Mizuwake Pass - Mizuwake Pass

A pass in central Oita Prefecture where National Route 210 crosses the border between Yufu City and Kokonoe Town in Kusu County. It is 709 meters above sea level. It is in a valley at the foot of the two volcanoes, Mt. Karuto and Mt. Noine, and is on the watershed between the Oita River and the Chikugo River, hence the name. In 1895 (Meiji 28), a prefectural road was opened across Kawanishi Pass, 2 kilometers southwest of the main pass and 730 meters above sea level, but because it was too steep, the route was changed to this pass over a period of four years starting in 1912 (Taisho 1). A tunnel for the Oita Expressway runs below the pass.

大分県中部、国道210号が由布市・玖珠(くす)郡九重町(ここのえまち)境を越える所にある峠。標高709メートル。カルト山・野稲(のいね)岳両火山の裾合(すそあい)谷で、大分川と筑後川(ちくごがわ)の分水界にあたり、この名を得た。1895年（明治28）県道が本峠の南西2キロメートル、標高730メートルの川西峠を越えて開かれたが、険しかったので、1912年（大正1）から4年をかけてこの峠筋に路線を変更したもの。峠下に大分自動車道のトンネルが通じている。
