Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata (English name)

Hemiptera, Homoptera, Cicadaidae. Body length (to the wing tip) 56-60mm. The body is black, and usually has a reddish brown area on the inside of the dorsum of the pronotum. The forewings are opaque reddish brown with yellow-green or brown veins. This is the most common cicada, appearing from July to September. Its song is monotonous and sounds like a "zee." It is said that it becomes an adult seven years after laying eggs. The larvae can become pests of fruit trees such as apples and pears. It is distributed throughout Japan, Korea, and central and northern China. A closely related species, Ryukyu brown cicada G. bimaculata , is found from Amami Oshima to Okinawa Island, but it has reddish brown or pale green markings on its thorax and its song is very short and intermittent.

半翅目同翅亜目セミ科。体長 (翅端まで) 56～60mm。体は黒色で，普通，前胸背内側に赤褐色の部分がある。前後翅ともに不透明な赤褐色で脈は黄緑色ないし褐色。最も普通にみられるセミで，7～9月頃出現する。鳴き方は単調で「じー」と聞える。産卵から7年目に成虫となるといわれる。幼虫はリンゴ，ナシなどの果樹害虫となることがある。日本全土，朝鮮，中国中北部に分布する。なお奄美大島から沖縄本島にかけては近縁種リュウキュウアブラゼミ G. bimaculataがいるが，これは胸部に赤褐色や淡緑色の斑紋があり，鳴き方はきわめて短く断続的である。
