Shimazu Hisamoto

A scholar of Japanese literature. Born in Kagoshima Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Literature, Faculty of Letters, Tokyo Imperial University. After serving as a professor at the First Higher School and Toyo University, he is now a professor at the University of Tokyo. He is a Doctor of Literature. His doctoral thesis, "A Study of Rare Novels from Modern Times," was published as "New Collection of Modern Novels" (1928). He has made outstanding achievements in the study of legends, tales, and narrative literature from ancient and medieval times, and his unified research method, which combines a meticulous attitude to historical investigation and a flexible and sharp sensibility that makes full use of his extensive knowledge, is unique. His works include "Lectures on the Tale of Genji (translated into Japanese)" (6 volumes, 1930-49), "Legends and Literature of Yoshitsune" (1935), "New Thoughts on the Tale of Genji" (1936), "New Thoughts on Japanese Literature" (1941), and "Considerations on Japanese Literature" (1947).

国文学者。鹿児島県生まれ。東京帝国大学文科大学文学科卒業。第一高等学校教授、東洋大学教授などを経て東大教授。文学博士。学位論文「近古稀覯(きこう)小説の研究」は『近古小説新纂初輯(しんさんしょしゅう)』（1928）として刊行された。古代中世の伝説・説話・物語文学の研究に優れた業績をあげ、該博な知見を駆使した緻密(ちみつ)な考証態度と柔軟尖鋭(せんえい)な感性の統一された研究方法は独自。『対訳源氏物語講話』6冊（1930～49）、『義経(よしつね)伝説と文学』（1935）、『源氏物語新考』（1936）、『国文学の新考察』（1941）、『日本文学考論』（1947）などがある。
