A group of crop varieties that mature early and can be harvested early. In contrast, those with a late harvest period are called "okute" (late maturing) and those with an intermediate harvest period are called "nakate" (mid-season maturing). This applies to many crops, but in Japan it is often used to refer to rice, which is also written as "wase." Early-maturing rice varieties are usually highly thermosensitive (the property of promoting flower bud differentiation when temperatures rise), so if sown late, the vegetative growth period is shorter and the yield falls, but if sown and planted early the yield will be stable. Early-maturing varieties generally have lower yields than late-maturing varieties, but their shorter cultivation period makes them advantageous for crop rotation. In particular, with vegetables, early shipments are welcomed in the market and often bring in high profits, so there is a high demand for early-maturing, high-yielding varieties.
